The Austerity Map

In the UK the British government has responded to the country's fiscal deficit by drastically cutting state welfare benefits. The Financial Times has published an interactive map visualizing the cost of the cuts to working age adults in each local authority.

The Austerity Map demonstrates that the impact on household incomes will be greatest in those areas outside the ruling Conservative party's strongholds. The map includes options to view the overall impact of the welfare cuts on working adults in each local authority and to view the impact of individual cuts, such as the cuts to the disability allowance and child benefit.

The map visualization is part of a large Austerity Audit by the Financial Times, which includes an analysis of the likely impact of the cuts on employment and the retail sector. It also examines the political arguments for and against the government's approach to cutting the fiscal deficit.
